Motorists heading into Ipswich will be relieved that a fault causing "carnage" to traffic has now been fixed.

A fault occurred at the lights at the junction between Meredith Road and Norwich Road, according to Suffolk County Council, which has now been put right.

Councillor Sam Murray, county councillor for Castle Hill in Ipswich, said the change to the traffic light pattern caused "absolute carnage" down Meredith Road, and said she lobbied the county council for a change.

"My residents say they couldn't get anywhere", the councillor said. "I believe it was to do with the timing between the lights changing.

"I noticed something wasn't right and contacted the council, and it seems they have now changed, and they have resolved a big part of the problem."

A spokesperson for Suffolk County Council, said: “There was an irregular fault with the lights at the junction of Meredith Road and Norwich Road which meant that the controller was dropping off its preferred method onto a back-up one.

"There hasn’t been a change to the pattern, but the lights are now working as originally planned.”
