Community leaders and residents have come together in memory of a 97-year-old RAF veteran from Ipswich after just three people - including two solicitors - were due to attend his funeral.

Described in his obituary as a "dear friend to many", Ronald Frank Gale - who died on December 23 2022 - was due to have just one neighbour and two lawyers say their final goodbyes later this month.

After the news was shared on social media, a plea for more attendees was sent out, resulting in a huge number of people - including local politicians and fellow veterans - coming together to make sure Mr Gale receives the send-off he deserves.

Now, the service, which is due to take place at 11:45am, on Wednesday 22 February at Ipswich Crematorium, looks set to have a huge attendance - with one Facebook post by the Suffolk Royal British Legion receiving almost 900 shares.

"The response has been incredible," said Sandra Bromley, membership engagement officer at the Suffolk RBL.

"There's a chance we could even see people queuing for the service.

"At the RBL, we're looking to get at least six legion standards to attend alongside a bugler and maybe even a piper.

"I want to say an overwhelming thank you to everyone who responded."

Sam Murray, a councillor for Ipswich Borough Council and former soldier in the Territorial Army, will be attending alongside a number of other local politicians.

"It wouldn't feel right to know that someone who has served our then Queen and country would not have someone there to say a final thank you," she said.

"Though I do not know him, I will be eternally grateful for his service and will be there to show that gratitude.

"I hope many others will be there too."
