Would you like to help choose the design for the engravings in the Ipswich town centre’s well-known square?
Ipswich Borough Council is now asking residents to vote on one of three designs which will appear on Arras Square, the area beside the Buttermarket Centre and St Stephen's Church.
Members of the public can choose from designs that pay homage to the military personnel who fell in the Battle of Arras in World War One.
The designs include:
1. Poetry
Suffolk Poetry Society has been contacted to choose options regarding poetry relating to the Battle of Arras in WW1.
If this is the preferred option, councillors will select an appropriate piece, which will be hand-carved into stone by a local artisan and then fixed to the concrete base units in the new amphitheatre seating area.
2. Mythical creature
This relates to an image carved into the ancient bressummer beam (due to be relocated to St. Stephens church) previously located in Arras Square.
3. Arches
Imagery that relates to the arches in Arras, France.
