Ipswich Borough Council has applied for new CCTV cameras to be placed near the town centre, in order to combat and prevent crime.
The council has applied for five new cameras to be placed around the Corn Exchange and Town Hall, covering Princes Street and King Street.
Three of the CCTV cameras will replace the existing ones outside the Town Hall, with the other two being placed above the existing entrance to the Corn Exchange on King Street.
Last year, the council received safer streets funding from the Home Office, in the region of £500,000, with Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner, Ipswich Central and Suffolk County Council contributing money to take the total to £932,000.
This total is being put towards making Ipswich safer for residents, with CCTV upgrades to improve monitoring, leading to swifter responses, but also greater coverage for the cameras.
In total, 26 new CCTV cameras with improved picture quality are being installed in key areas such as Princes Street, Tavern Street, Neptune Marina and the Buttermarket area.
After the recent fatal stabbing on Westgate Street in Ipswich, shop workers on the street called for more CCTV around the area.
One worker from H.Samuel on Westgate Street said: "I feel like we as shops are relied on to have CCTV, but there isn't anything that covers the town centre.
"When I lived in London, there were cameras everywhere, but here, I don't see many."
Councillor Alasdair Ross, Ipswich Borough Council portfolio holder for community protection and health, said: "Ipswich Borough Council is deeply saddened by Tuesday's incident, and we send the family our condolences at this tragic time.
"Our 24/7 Emergency Services Centre Team has been supporting the Suffolk Constabulary by monitoring our extensive CCTV provision and will continue to provide support for as long as needed.
"We understand that this will be a difficult time for our communities and we want to reassure people that our Safer Streets initiatives and CCTV operations are in place to help the police tackle crime and make our communities feel safer.
"Ipswich Borough Council remains committed to delivering our Safer Streets operations, which are designed to tackle crime, educate young adults, and make our streets safer for everyone.
"Our initiatives have made improvements to Ipswich, but it's clear that we still have work to do alongside our partners."
