Pictures taken at about 12pm on Tuesday showed drivers were still passing through, albeit at a slow speed.
Suffolk Highways later announced that a temporary road closure had been put in place.
The road did not reopen until 5pm – about five hours after it initially closed.
According to the AA traffic map, small queues started to form in the area.
Sproughton Road regularly floods after heavy rainfall, with the road being closed on a number of occasions due to standing water.
Several flood alerts are in place in East Anglia, though none are in effect in Suffolk.
