New affordable homes could be available as soon as 2024 as part of plans to build a further 300 properties across Ipswich.

Ipswich Borough Council's house-building company, Handford Homes aims to have 402 homes built across the town by the end of 2025.

The new homes will be built at sites in Ravenswood, Bibb Way, Fore Hamlet and Hawke Road.

This is in addition to 100 homes that have been completed since 2020.

In a report to the council's executive the Ravenswood development will see 96 homes created across a 5.4-acre site.

67 of the new homes will be let by the council at affordable rent, 19 will be leased by the council’s General Fund to Handford Lettings for let at market rent and the remaining 10 will be Starter Homes for sale.

The total development is estimated between £15m to £20m.

The development at Fore Hamlet recently received planning permission, with work due to start onsite at both Ravenswood and Bibb Way in January 2023.

A planning application has been submitted for new homes and a play area at Hawke Road at the former Diesco site.

This project is estimated to cost between £8m to £8.5m.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Ipswich Borough Council portfolio holder for housing, said: "The development of new affordable housing remains a priority for Ipswich Borough Council.

"I was delighted to be at the official opening of 16 flats in Grimwade Street recently, with residents very pleased with their new homes.

“Ipswich has an increasing demand for housing, and we’re pleased that over the next three years we will see a further 300 new homes being developed, so I’m looking forward to several more official openings.”

In a report to the executive meeting on January 10 it states more than £19m in works have been completed.

This includes £10.5m to develop 60 new homes at the former Tooks Bakery and £3.3m for 16 flats in Grimwade Street.

A £5.7m project created 24 new council homes in five locations, including Mallard Way, Shelldrake Drive as well as properties in Emmanuel Close, Coltsfoot Road and Halton Crescent.

The report says Handford Home is working to develop a "pipeline of sites" for construction after 2024/25,
