A former church and BT offices are being considered as sites to create 200 new council homes after Ipswich secured more than £3.3m in funding from the government.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities allocated the money from the Brownfield Land Release Fund 2 to transform redundant industrial sites, disused car parks and derelict buildings into new places for people to live.

Ipswich secured £3,340,500 - the second largest sum - with plans for three new housing schemes.

These include plans for 26 new homes and a significantly improved play area on Hawke Road, 30 new homes on Fore Hamlet and 150 new homes on the former BT offices in Bibb Way.

41 councils across England received almost £35 million to help kickstart regeneration in towns and cities, with Ipswich’s award being the second highest in the country.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, housing portfolio holder for Ipswich Borough Council, said: “I am delighted with this award, which will help deliver over 200 council homes.

“It also shows that Ipswich Borough Council can pull together a compelling bid that attracts investment into Ipswich.”

The scheme will be rolled out over the next two years, putting in place 2,200 homes, including more than 800 affordable homes across the country that will be built for local communities.

This will help more young people and families onto the housing ladder and generate up to 7000 new jobs in housing and construction.

Rt Hon Lucy Frazer, minister for housing, said: “We are helping local communities transform unwanted, urban eyesores into thriving places that people are proud to call home."

"Regeneration is at the heart of our levelling up mission and this new brownfield first fund will help communities across the country unlock disused, council-owned sites to build more of the right homes in the right places”

Cabinet office minister Alex Burghart added that the funding is great news for businesses, the industry and local people.

Mr Burghart said: “This funding is absolutely crucial for stimulating growth and forms part of a push across the whole of government to get the UK economy moving.”
