Roads across Suffolk have been flooded after the county saw heavy rainfall over last night and this morning.

A flood alert was in place for several hours in the west of the county after river levels were forecast to be higher than usual.

The spell of rain was one of a few sustained downpours in Suffolk since a dry summer that saw record-breaking temperatures.

The flood alert covered the Upper Stour near Haverhill and warned that minor flooding to low-lying land, roads and riverside areas was likely.

Over the border in north Essex, a more severe flood warning was in place for Bumpstead Brook in the Steeple Bumpstead area.

Sproughton Road in Ipswich, which has previously been affected by standing water, was closed for several hours on Thursday afternoon.

However, some cars were seen attempting to pass through the water.

Foxhall recycling centre, on the outskirts of Ipswich, was also affected by flooding between the wood bins and bottle banks, though the site remained open.

People were advised to book slots for another day.

Speaking on Thursday morning, Chris Bell, from East Anglian-based forecaster Weatherquest, said Cavendish, near Sudbury, had seen 21mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.

Mr Bell added: "The heaviest of the rain will come over the next few hours until about midday.

"The rain will clear out from west to east throughout the afternoon."

Friday is expected to be a clear and dry day before the return of showers over the weekend.
