FELIXSTOWE: Sports-loving father and daughter John and Katherine Rednall have been bowled over – after scooping the top awards at the same ceremony.
It was a real family occasion for the Rednalls, both bowls players, and a complete surprise as they were named as Felixstowe’s sports personality and junior sports personality of the year.
Mr Rednall, who was the English National Champion of Champions last year, became only the second person to win the award twice in its 33-year history and was thrilled to see his 14-year-old daughter – an emerging talent in the sport – receive her award.
“It was a real surprise – a lovely family double,” said Mr Rednall, 46, a teacher at Needham Market Middle School.
“It’s super to see Katherine play – she has the enthusiasm I had at 14 and I think she is better than I was at that stage. She is on a bit of a roll at the moment.”
Both play at Felixstowe and Suffolk Bowls Club, St Edmunds Road, Felixstowe.
Mr Rednall has been an England international for 23 years and last year became national champion of champions.
Katherine, who goes to Stowmarket High, last year won two championships, one of them the John Rednall Cup named after her dad, beating many older players, and recently won the Suffolk Under 15s and Under 25s singles.
She also played for the winning England Under 18s in Northern Ireland, seeing off competition from the home nation, Scotland and Wales.
