Capel Plough FC has chosen Ivor the greyhound as the club’s new mascot - following a month-long social media competition.
Players from the club’s 16 teams nominated their pets to be official club mascot, with more than 60 animals - including dogs, cats, tortoises, snakes and ponies - vying for the job.
Retired six-year-old greyhound Ivor, who had been rehomed with the help of the Greyhound Trust, was eventually picked as the top dog by judge, and competition sponsor, David Tilling, owner of local pet supply store Rats, Cats and Elephants.
Overjoyed owners Amy, 14, Ellie, 12 and Lucy, nine, Thompson, who all play for Capel Plough FC were thrilled their pet had won the accolade.
Amy said: “Ivor is a very special dog and we love him very much.
“It took a while for Ivor to be rehomed because he’s a large greyhound and the black ones are less popular, but he’s a gentle giant and has settled into our family life really well.”
The club had an official presentation last week with Ivor dressed in a new bespoke football kit.
Adrian Goodwin, the club’s head of youth football said: “Capel Plough FC is not only about the enjoyment of football and associated health benefits, it’s also about bringing local families, community and businesses together.
“Our club continues to be one of Suffolk’s quickest growing and supported clubs especially with our female and youth football teams.
“Our adult squads are additionally going from strength to strength.
“Having a club mascot like Ivor creates a great and positive atmosphere.
“The club has never been better and long may it continue.”
