A SUFFOLK doctor has died in hospital following a road accident near Hadleigh, it was revealed today.

The man, who is believed to have been a GP in the Long Melford area, suffered serious head injures when his car was involved in a collision with a tree along the A1071, near Hadleigh at 1pm yesterday.

He was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital by the East Anglian Air Ambulance after the crash on the Hintlesham side of the local RSPB reserve at Wolves Wood. No other vehicles were involved.

Suffolk Police today said they could not release the man's name until his next-of-kin had been informed. However the practice manager at his surgery today said they were still coming to terms with his death.

"We are too shocked to make any statement," she said.

The victim, who is believed to have been practising medicine for 30 years is said to have died last night.

He is the third person to have been killed on Suffolk's roads in just five days.

Teenage motorcyclist Murrell Keys was killed on Saturday in Framlingham as he rode to see his best friend. The accident happened at around 6.30pm when Mr Keys of Orford Road, Bromeswell was involved in a collision with a First Eastern Counties bus.

In the second motorbike related accident in just two days Frank Carsboult, 53, died on Friday when the Triumph 900 Special sidecar combination he was riding was in a collision with a car.

Mr Carsboult died on the same road that claimed a life yesterday. He was riding on the A1071 on the Newton side of Boxford, near Sudbury.

Meanwhile a 45-year-old Newmarket woman who was cut free from the mangled wreckage of her car has been released from hospital.

The accident happened shortly before 10pm on Monday at the junction of Lower Dales View Road and Norwich Road when a blue Ford Sierra was involved in a collision with a metallic-blue Hyundai saloon.

Suffolk Accident Rescue Service doctor Andy Mason said that the woman was cut from the wreckage of her car as a precautionary measure and was taken to Ipswich Hospital with minor bruising and cuts to the head.

She is believed to have been released later that night.

The 27-year-old male driver of the Sierra was not hurt.

Elsewhere two elderly people were taken to hospital after a crash on the A12.

Three ambulances attended the accident at Wrentham at about 6.50pm yesterday, and conveyed both to the James Paget Hospital in Lowestoft.

A Ford Granada driven by Kenneth Nell, 72, of Surrey, was involved in a collision with a Peugeot 106 driven by Lee Bircham of Carlton Colville, Lowestoft.

Fire crews from Wrentham, Southwold, and Normanshurst helped at the scene until 8pm.

A police spokesman said Mr Nell suffered a possible fractured collarbone, and his female passenger is believed to have later been discharged from hospital.
