Ipswich is fighting back after two of the London based radio station's DJs launched a scathing attack on the town by referring to it as a home for inbreeds, renaming it Inbred-swich.

The duo, known as Bam Bam and Streetboy, embarked on their verbal assault on Ipswich on the station's breakfast show, referring to Ipswich as a backwater dump with a population of idiots.

They claimed that Streetboy had been to Ipswich with a faked-up picture of an amalgamated man and woman's face to mock the town's people by asking them if they were related to the person in the picture.

And to top it all off, the wisecracking pair added that Streetboy had to speak slowly during his visit so the folk of Ipswich could understand what he was saying.

Speaking to the Evening Star after their on-air rant Bam Bam said: "Just looking at where Ipswich is on the map makes me laugh.

"At least Norwich has got a bit of credibility – it's even got Delia Smith," he added, clearly ignorant to the fact of Delia's defection from being an Ipswich fan when she joined the Canaries' board.

During their mocking of Ipswich the Kiss 100FM DJs decided they would make a demo tape and send it to one of our town's radio station in an effort to get a job and be able to terrorise the Suffolk airwaves. Bam Bam added he would make it "really bad" to ensure they got a job.

Whether they go through with their plan or not, it is highly unlikely that they will be welcome here – a place it seems they know nothing about.

Ipswich may not boast the liveliness of London but with a Premier League football team, impressive business links, a booming night life and history to be proud of, the town is far from being the backward place Bam Bam and Streetboy think it is.

Hitting back at the offensive verbal attack made over the Kiss 100FM airwaves Emma Bailey and Alison Lynch had some equally scathing remarks for them.

Emma said: "They shouldn't be so judgmental. They don't know us.

"Kiss FM used to be good ten years ago. Now Vibe FM rates way above them.

"We've got a better local dance station than anyone and Ipswich has really come of its own in the last three or four years."

Alison added: "Obviously they've never been to Ipswich. If they had they'd know it is nothing like they say it is."

The comments of Bam Bam and Streetboy has angered many people living in Ipswich and, while it would be useful to show the two DJs exactly what Ipswich has to offer, it is unlikely they would get a warm welcome.

Emma said: "We won't be inviting them down. It's not worth it."

Others in the town were outraged and threw down the gauntlet to the duo, challenging them to come here and tell the people of Ipswich what they think.

Emma Hoban lives in Ipswich and said the DJ's are not right in what they say.

She said: "They should come down and stand on the steps of the Cornhill, say it over a loud speaker and see what people think of them.

"At the end of the day it is a stereotypical comment."

Her friend Emma Turmel, 18, from Hadleigh, said she had not heard the comments.

She said: "I would have kicked off if I had heard that – Ipswich is a nice place."

Laura Peters, a 16-year-old student from Shotley, said that the comments were unfair.

She said: "That is too harsh – it makes no difference where you come from, everyone is individual."

Levi Hilden, 17 from Copdock, said: "That is bang out of order – living in Ipswich beats living in London."

Kelly Partridge and Lucinda Gray, from Brantham, were also aghast at the comments, labelling them rubbish and said that Ipswich had some good nightlife.
