A MOTORIST escaped injury today when a car spun as it travelled along the outside lane of the A14.

The Vauxhall Nova came to a stop facing in the wrong direction of the eastbound carriageway in Bury St Edmunds at about 6.30am.

The car was moved to a lay-by by 7am so traffic was able to move freely.

It was the latest in a string of accidents to happen across the county.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance was called to Saxmundham at about 2.45pm yesterday after two cars were involved in a collision.

A 51-year-old woman with suspected chest injuries was airlifted to hospital from the scene on the B1122 at Middleton Moor.

Later in the day four people were taken to hospital after a three-vehicle crash on another of the county's roads.

Two people were reported to be "seriously injured", but not in a life-threatening condition, and two other people were described as "walking wounded".

They were all taken to the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds for treatment following the accident on the A143 at Great Barton just after 6pm yesterday.

Firefighters took an hour to free two people who were trapped in the wreckage after the accident, which involved a Rover car, a Vauxhall car and a Mercedes van.

The road was closed in both directions for about three hours as the emergency services attended the scene.

In a separate incident yesterday a 12-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital after suffering a suspected neck injury at school.

The Air Ambulance was called at 1.16pm yesterday to Ixworth Middle School where a pupil had suffered what were believed to be neck or spinal injuries.

The boy was flown to the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds for treatment. No further details about the incident were available last night.
