ONE man has died after the lorry he was driving careered across the carriageway of the A14, near Stowmarket, hitting an oncoming car in the process.No one else was injured in the accident, although a female driver of a W-reg Toyota Yaris was treated for shock after the lorry hit the side of her car.

However, the outside lane of the eastbound carriageway was still coned off by police.

The impact of the crash knocked the car up the embankment, leaving a dent in the driver's side passenger door. The Layland DAF lorry fell on to its side, blocking both lanes of the carriageway.

The woman, believed to be around 55-years-old, was treated by paramedics while she waited for her husband to pick her up and take her home to Aldeburgh, Suffolk.

Emergency services all attended the scene of the accident, which happened at around 7pm on Thursday.

The lorry was travelling down the Felixstowe bound carriageway of the A14, but swerved across the central reservation onto the Stowmarket bound carriageway.

Police sergeant Steve Brooks said: "The lorry came through the barrier and collided with another vehicle.

"We have no idea how it happened. We are currently investigating but it is a mystery."

The driver of the lorry was not believed to have been killed instantly, although a doctor pronounced him dead at the scene shortly after.

Fire crews from Stowmarket, Needham Market and Ipswich attended.

Paul Seager, assistant divisional fire officer, said: "The only person trapped was the driver of the lorry. We started to try and extricate the driver from the wreckage but the doctor pronounced him dead at the scene.

"We are waiting for police to complete their investigations before we can remove the body."

Road diversions were set up, through Stowmarket on the eastbound carriageway and via the A1120 for westbound traffic.
