For £5.5m, the actor would be able to buy this grade II-listed country house, built originally during the reign of Elizabeth I and featuring eight bedrooms, six bathrooms and four reception rooms.

Agents Savills was keeping tight-lipped about any showbiz interest in the property, but Jane Kenny, the agent handling the sale, pointedly refused to confirm or deny the rumours. “We can't confirm who we've been talking to about the estate,” she said.
“We can say that it hasn't been sold. There has been a lot of interest but we cannot disclose the names of any potential purchaser.”
