Mr Salmon was my English teacher at Northgate from 1977-1979 when I was in the Sixth Form. I have him to thank for nurturing a love of literature that has lasted a lifetime and which I am profoundly grateful to him for.
Mr Salmon was a truly inspirational teacher. He introduced us to a huge range of poets and playwrights - way beyond the A level curriculum - things he thought we should know about, and would enjoy. I have never forgotten the visit of the poet R.S. Thomas that he arranged for us., or being introduced the the plays of Tom Stoppard, Peter Nicholls and many more - all new and exciting in to us in the late 70s - which opened the door to a whole new world of ideas and experiences.
Strangely, I was reading something this morning that prompted me to think about Mr Salmon and how important he had been to me. I decided to do a google search, and came across this notice of his recent death. I send my deepest condolences to his family and friends, who I am sure will miss him immeasurably. I would like them to know how thankful I am - and how inspiring it remains to read of in a life so truly well-lived.
