Two women were taken to hospital and a man arrested after police were called to reports of a double stabbing in Felixstowe.
Officers were called to an address in Mill Lane shortly after 2am on New Year's Day.
Suffolk police said two women were taken to hospital - one said to have suffered a serious stomach wound, while the other sustained a less serious shoulder injury and was released the same morning.
A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in custody.
A police presence remained at the scene this morning.
A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said officers were confident there was no wider threat to the community and were carrying out reassurance patrols in the area.
He added: "Police have arrested a man in connection with a double stabbing in Felixstowe.
"Officers were called to a property in Mill Lane just after 2am after reports that two women had been stabbed in the property.
"A 33-year-old woman sustained a serious knife wound to her stomach while a 44-year-old woman sustained a knife injury to the shoulder.
"Both victims were taken to Ipswich Hospital for treatment.
"The 33-year-old is in a serious but stable condition, while the 44-year-old was released from hospital earlier this morning following treatment to her shoulder injury.
"Police have arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and he has been taken to Martlesham Heath police investigation centre for questioning.
"A cordon remains in place at the property and police are conducting reassurance patrols in the area.
"The investigation is still at an early stage but police are confident that the parties involved are known to each other with no wider threat to the community."
One of the councillors for Western Felixstowe, Mike Deacon, said: "This is absolutely shocking news, I am quite frankly horrified.
"You read about these kind of things happening in the newspaper but you don't expect it to come to your streets.
"I was heading back from a New Years party close to this time and people were out on the street, it makes you think this could happen to anyone."
